Situada en el sur de Gambia, Casamance es una región senegalesa que se caracteriza por el paisaje selvático y las antiguas creencias y tradiciones que los distintos grupos étnicos, nativos de la zona, han logrado mantener, a pesar del avance del cristianismo y la posterior islamización del país.
Los habitantes de los pequeños pueblos, dispersos por toda la región y escondidos entre los bosques, mantienen un estilo de vida que respeta la naturaleza y el medio ambiente y son, como sus ancestros, animistas.
La energía, el poder de los hechiceros y chamanes, la conexión con el pasado y la muerte son claves para entender esta creencia tradicional.
Este reportaje, realizado junto con la fotoperiodísta Alicia Petrashova, se basa en el testimonio de distintos guardianes de fetiches, objetos mágicos que comunican a los mortales con los dioses, y la historia de los marabouts, hechiceros de la zona.
El ambiente mágico y espiritual se convierte en el hilo conductor de este proyecto. Los resultados se muestran en forma de fotografía y video.
Located in the southern Gambia, Casamance is a Senegalese region that is characterized by the jungle landscape and ancient beliefs and traditions that native ethnic groups have managed to maintain, despite the advance of Christianity and the subsequent Islamization of the country.
The inhabitants of the small villages, scattered throughout the region and hidden among the forests, maintain a lifestyle that respects nature and the environment and are, as their ancestors were, animists.
The energy, the power of sorcerers and shamans, the connection with the past and death are key to understand this traditional belief.
This reportage, made with Alicia Petrashova, is based on the testimony of the guardians of the fetishes which are magical objects that communicate mortals with gods, and the story of the marabouts, sorcerers of the area.
The magical and spiritual atmosphere becomes the guiding thread of this project. the results are shown in the form of photography and video.
